Fillers
Fillers are best known for their ability to smooth deep wrinkles or plump the lips. Yet, there are many other ways to use fillers, including using them to fill depressed acne scars.
The scientific name for depressed acne scarring is atrophic acne scarring. This type of scarring looks like like small pits in the skin. Atrophic acne scars are a common result of one of the most troublesome types of acne, cystic acne. Though, they can be caused by many types of acne, as well as by chickenpox.
Depressed acne scars are a permanent type of acne scarring; they do not go away without treatment. However, they can be easily, and quickly, treated with fillers. To treat acne scarring with fillers, Dr. Zadeh will strategically inject a small amount of filler into the depressed areas of the skin, filling them and smoothing the skin.
Many different types of fillers can be used to treat acne scarring, including hyaluronic acid fillers like Juvederm, Restylane, and Belotero. These fillers are temporary, usually lasting anywhere from 6 to 18 months. However, the results of fillers for acne scarring can easily be maintained with regular follow up appointments.
Sculptra
Like the fillers we mention in the last section, Sculptra is a filler that can treat depressed acne scarring. However, Sculptra works differently from hyaluronic acid fillers, which makes it last considerably longer. The active ingredient in Sculptra is poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a collagen stimulator. When Sculptra is injected into the skin, it stimulates the body’s own collagen growth, causing the treated area to plump and smooth. This collagen growth allows the results of Sculptra for acne scarring to last for up to 3 to 5 years.
Microneedling
Microneedling is a treatment that stimulates collagen growth, which can reduce the appearance of depressed acne scars. During a microneedling treatment, tiny needles stimulate the deep layer of skin, which results in collagen stimulation that smooths and evens out the skin. Microneedling can also be used to deliver products deep into the skin, which can help treat the root causes of acne.
Microneedling is often a good option for those who would like to the reduce the appearance of numerous acne scars across the entire face. Additionally, microneedling is a good treatment for reducing the skin discoloration sometimes left behind by acne.
Chemical Peels
Chemical peels are an excellent way to treat several skin conditions caused by acne. They can also can help treat the root cause of acne, reducing the possibility of further scarring.
Chemical peels work by purifying the skin and removing dead skin cells. A peel removes skin impurities, speeds up cell turnover, and can stimulate collagen growth. Chemical peels are often a great option for those with mild to moderate acne scarring or skin discoloration caused by acne. Additionally, they can be excellent addition to an acne scarring treatment plan for those with more severe scarring.

Subcision
Subcision is an acne scarring treatment that can help correct depressed scars. During treatment with subcision, a minor cut is made upon these depressed areas. This incision technique causes the body to create tissue in the depressed area, evening out the skin.
Punch Excision
Punch excision is a common treatment for the deep, slim acne scars known as ice pick scars. During this treatment, a small punch tool is used to remove damaged, scarred skin. These treatment is generally only used for more extreme scarring. However, it can be a great option for those suffering from more severe scarring, especially when used in conjunction with other treatments.
