They say that if you want to know a woman’s age, look at her hands. That’s because the hands are one of the first places we show our age, and they’re also generally one of the last places we think to apply sunscreen or skin care. This often leads to a person’s hands looking noticeably older than their face, which they may have protected and treated more carefully. But if you’re concerned about the appearance of your hands, know that there are multiple hand rejuvenation treatments that can help you turn back the clock on your aging hands. Below, we’ll go over everything you need to know about hand rejuvenation, including what hand rejuvenation is, your hand rejuvenation treatment options, and what you should expect after getting a hand rejuvenation treatment.

What is Hand Rejuvenation?

Hand rejuvenation is a treatment or combination of treatments that help to restore a younger look to the hands. Depending on your unique signs of aging on the hands, you may need one treatment or a combination of treatments to achieve optimal results from hand rejuvenation.

Your Hand Rejuvenation Treatment Options

Different hand rejuvenation treatments can address different signs of aging. So, below, we’ll go over some signs of aging in the hands and talk about each one’s treatment options.

Prominent Veins, Wrinkles, and Fine Lines

We’re grouping these three signs of aging in the hands together because they’re caused by the same issue: lower natural collagen production. As we age, our bodies start to produce less collagen, a protein in our body that keeps our skin looking firm, smooth, and youthful. As a result of the natural aging process, we lose collagen in the skin throughout our body, including in the skin on our hands. But since the skin on our hands is naturally quite thin, collagen loss in the hands can be quickly noticeable. Collagen loss in the hands can lead to very prominent veins on the back of the hands, as well as fine lines and wrinkles.

The best treatment for fine lines, wrinkles, and prominent veins on the hands is an injectable dermal filler that can restore volume and hydration to the hands. At our office, Dr. Zadeh uses a variety of FDA-approved injectable fillers for hand rejuvenation, including Voluma, Restylane Lyft, and Juvederm Ultra Plus. These are hyaluronic acid fillers that can fill, plump, and smooth the skin by delivering nutrients and helping the skin hold in water, restoring a youthful appearance. Dermal fillers are a quick, affordable, and non-invasive way to rejuvenate the hands. They also provide results instantly; you’ll be able to see the results of your dermal filler hand rejuvenation immediately.

Brown Spots and Discoloration

Uneven skin pigmentation and brown spots (also sometimes called age spots or sun spots) are a very common sign of aging skin on the hands. Dark spots and other types of uneven skin pigmentation are often the result of sun damage caused by sun exposure. So, this sign of aging in the hands can appear early in those who have spent quite a bit of time in the sun, especially if they were lax about wearing sunscreen on their hands.

There are several types of non-invasive treatments that can reduce or remove skin tone discoloration in the hands, including laser skin resurfacing. Laser resurfacing is an excellent option for treating discoloration on the hands, especially as it can also improve other signs of aging on the hands (such as fine lines and wrinkles). At our office, Dr. Zadeh uses the Nano-Ray Laser for skin resurfacing. This laser removes blemishes on the skin through the use of a specialized type of light. During a Nano-Ray Laser treatment, the skin absorbs the laser’s light energy, which rapidly vaporizes water within that tissue. This causes an almost instant removal of many skin issues.

Laser resurfacing is generally the best treatment option for those who have more noticeable discoloration on their skin. But for those who have more mild to moderate discoloration, chemical peels and microdermabrasion can sometimes be great alternatives to laser resurfacing.

What to Expect After Getting Hand Rejuvenation

Your experience following your skin rejuvenation treatment will vary depending on the specific treatment you received:

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers require absolutely no downtime. After receiving a dermal filler treatment in your hands, you can immediately resume your regular daily activities. Some people experience mild swelling or bruising after getting dermal fillers, but this typically fades within a few days. The results of a dermal filler hand rejuvenation treatment will be seen immediately and will last anywhere from six months to one year, depending on the specific filler used for your treatment.

Laser Resurfacing

The after effects of a Nano-Ray Laser treatment will vary depending on the depth of your treatment. After getting a Nano-Ray Laser treatment, you may experience some redness, darkness, or mild swelling for 1 to 2 days. Then, your skin may also start to peel as new clearer, smoother skin is formed. It’s very important to keep your skin hydrated and protected from the sun after getting a Nano-Ray Laser treatment. Each patient at our office will be given specific instruction on how to best care for their skin after a Nano-Ray Laser hand rejuvenation treatment.
