Knowing your skin type is important in maintaining your skin health and preventing the signs of aging. Cosmetic treatments which are right for your skin type will decrease the chances of any unwanted reactions from happening. Proper assessment of your skin type can also determine if you are at a greater risk of getting skin cancer. We like to use the Fitzpatrick Classification Scale to determine our clients’ skin types before any laser hair removal or facial treatment. Fitzpatrick Skin Types were developed in 1975 by Dr. Thomas Fitzpatrick, a dermatologist at Harvard Medical School. Skin types on this scale range from light (I) to dark-skinned (VI). Your tolerance to sunlight is also taken into account when determining your Fitzpatrick Skin Type.
Take a look below and see if you can figure out what your skin type is.
Type I: Very fair white skin with red or blonde hair. You have freckles and always burn when under the sun. Your skin never tans.
Type II: Fair white skin with red or blonde hair. Your skin usually burns and you tan with difficulty.
Type III: Your skin is white with any hair color. You gradually tan and may sometimes get mildly burned
Type IV: Olive or light brown skin which rarely burns and tans easily.
Type V: Dark brown skin which tans very easily and very rarely burns
Type VI: Black skin which never burns and tans very easily.
Lighter skin types (I-II) have an increased risk of skin damage from sun exposure and increased skin irritation. They are also at an increased risk of developing skin cancer. This is important to keep in mind during any laser hair removal or IPL treatments as the lighter skin types can easily get burned with the wrong treatment settings. Darker skin types (IV-VI), on the other hand, are less likely to get burned. They are, however, more likely to get skin damage in the form of scarring and excess pigmentation. Not all laser hair removal machines can safely treat the darker skin types. Fortunately at Z Center for Cosmetic Health, we have the latest in laser hair removal technology which can provide fast, safe, pain-free laser hair removal treatments to all skin types.
