Are you tired of constantly having to shave or wax your unwanted hair? Laser hair removal can make your life much easier by permanently reducing your unwanted body hair quickly, safely, and effectively. Because laser hair removal is so fast and effective, it’s become one of the most popular cosmetic treatments today. But if you’ve never had laser hair removal, you may not know the in and outs of getting this hair removal treatment. To help you understand how to prepare for a laser hair removal treatment, we’ve written this guide to the do’s and don’ts of laser hair removal. This guide of will be separated into three sections: what to do before your treatment, what to do during your treatment, and what to do after your treatment.

Before Your Laser Hair Removal Treatment

DO: Protect your skin in the weeks leading up to your laser hair removal treatment by wearing sunscreen and trying to stay out of the sun.

DON’T: Don’t purposely tan in the weeks leading up to your treatment. You want to make sure you don’t have damaged skin when you come in to get your laser hair removal treatment, so do not tan outside or in tanning beds before your appointment.

DO: Shave the area you’ll be getting treated before your appointment (sometime within 24 hours of your appointment time). You want to shave as close as you can so that the laser hair removal machine can easily target the roots of your hair follicles.

DON’T: Wax, pluck, bleach, or use hair removal creams on the area you’ll be getting laser hair removal on. For laser hair removal to work, the laser needs to be able to target and destroy the roots of your hair follicles. So don’t remove these hair follicles by waxing, plucking, or using hair removal creams, and don’t make them harder for the laser to find by lightening them with bleach. If you have waxed, plucked, bleached, or used hair removal creams on the area you’d like to have treated, please wait six weeks before coming in for laser hair removal.

DO: Ask questions about anything you’re unsure about. If you’re confused about any part of the laser hair removal process, please feel free to ask us questions before you come in for your appointment. We want to help you understand the laser hair removal process so you’ll feel prepared for and excited about your treatment.

DON’T: Apply any lotions, perfumes, or creams before getting your laser hair removal treatment, as this will need to be removed before the laser is applied to your skin. Also, if you’ll be getting laser hair removal on your underarms, do not apply deodorant before coming in for your treatment.

During Your Laser Hair Removal Treatment

DO: Choose a reputable office like the Z Center for Cosmetic Health for your laser hair removal treatment. Laser hair removal is a safe, FDA-approved hair removal treatment. But the lasers used to remove your hair are only safe when used properly by a trained professional, so always remember to do your research before you decide where you’ll get your treatment.

DO: Protect your eyes during your laser hair removal treatment by wearing the specialized glasses we will provide. The lasers that will be removing your hair are strong. Just as you shouldn’t look directly at the sun, you shouldn’t look directly at hair removal lasers. So please do wear the glasses we will provide to protect your eyes.

DON’T: Be afraid to ask any questions or say something during your appointment. We always want our patients to feel they can ask questions or speak up during a treatment. If there’s something you don’t understand about your treatment or if you’re in any discomfort, please let us know.

After Your Laser Hair Removal Treatment

The Do’s and Don’ts of Laser Hair Removal

DO: Practice appropriate aftercare. After your laser hair removal treatment, you will be given instructions on how to care for your skin post-treatment. These instructions will generally include applying a healing gel but may include other aftercare, which can vary based on the individual patient. To make sure your skin heals properly after your laser hair removal treatment, always follow your recommended aftercare regimen.

DON’T: Expose your skin to the sun in the week following your treatment. Additionally, do not take hot showers, hot baths, or go in a sauna during this week.

DO: Remember to come back in for your next appointment during the timeframe we recommend. Our hair goes through different stages of growth, all at different times, and hair follicles must be in what’s called the Anagen stage (the growing stage) to be effectively removed. This is why all forms of laser hair removal require that you come in for multiple sessions. To get the best results from your laser hair removal, always schedule your appointments according to the timeline recommended by our office.
